Chinese Detain Indians for Diamond Smuggling

"Indians held in China over 'smuggling diamonds' "

"Chinese customs officials in the southern city of Shenzen have detained 21 Indians and charged them with smuggling diamonds.

They were allegedly working as "carriers" for a group involved in smuggling diamonds from Hong Kong to China, reports said.

Indian consular officers are expected to be granted access to the detained men, the Indian foreign ministry said.

Reports say many jewellers in Shenzen hire Indians to source supplies.

Customs officials in Shenzen, according to local reports, said they had conducted a raid last week following an investigation into a local smuggling ring.

Following the raid, some 33 foreigners, including 21 Indians, were arrested."
